Comporta: Incentive Experiences Worthy Of Your Next Group

Comporta has beaches. It has barefoot luxury. It has beautiful hotels. But what makes a stay here truly memorable? Ahead of inVOYAGE Comporta next month, we’re looking beyond the hotel to the experiences that make this corner of Portugal so compelling for incentive groups - from riding through rice fields and tasting local wines to spotting dolphins off the Arrábida Coast, shucking oysters and cooking traditional Portuguese dishes.

Experience it first-hand at inVOYAGE Comporta

Meet Comporta on Horseback

Few ways of seeing Comporta feel quite as natural as on horseback.

Rides can take groups through the region's distinctive landscape of rice paddies, pine forests, dunes and long stretches of Atlantic beach - landscapes that are difficult to appreciate from the road. Horse riding is already deeply connected to the area and is one of the experiences highlighted by local destination partners.

For incentive groups, it also offers something particularly valuable: an experience that feels active without being overly demanding, and genuinely rooted in the destination.

Event planner’s tip: Consider a morning or late-afternoon ride followed by lunch at a local estate or a beachside setting. For smaller VIP groups, a private ride along the coastline makes for a particularly memorable experience.

Taste the Terroir

Wine may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Comporta, but the surrounding Alentejo is one of Portugal's important wine regions.

A Micro-Terroir Wine Tasting offers a way to explore this on a more intimate level, focusing on the relationship between grape, soil and landscape rather than simply running through a conventional tasting menu.

The experience can be paired with a visit to the Rice Museum, bringing two of the region's defining agricultural traditions together. Rice cultivation has shaped Comporta's landscape for generations, and the museum offers context around the history and culture behind the fields that surround the destination.

For event planners, this is an opportunity to create a more layered experience: wine, food, agriculture and local history in one programme.

Event planner’s tip: Ideal for smaller groups, VIPs or as part of a food-and-wine themed afternoon.

Take to the Fairway at Terras da Comporta

Golf in Comporta has entered a new chapter.

The Dunas Golf Course at Terras da Comporta, designed by David McLay-Kidd, was created to follow the natural contours of the landscape rather than imposing a conventional course upon it. Its 18 holes move through native vegetation and the area's natural sandy terrain. Since opening in 2023, it has collected a string of international accolades, including recognition as Europe's Best Golf Course at the 2024 World Golf Awards and a place in the top 10 continental European courses in the 2025 Leading Courses ranking.

The newer Torre Golf Course, designed by Sergio García, gives planners another option within Terras da Comporta, with its own character and landscape setting.

Event planner’s tip: A natural choice for golf-led incentives, but also worth considering as a half-day activity for mixed groups, with non-golfers able to explore the surrounding landscape and hospitality.

Go Looking for Dolphins

For a genuine wow moment, head towards the Arrábida Coast and Sado Estuary.

The waters around Setúbal are home to a rare resident population of bottlenose dolphins - one of only a small number of resident populations in Europe. Approximately 30 dolphins live in the area year-round, and specialist trips operate from Setúbal Marina with guides and marine biologists.

The boats move through the protected coastal landscape, with the Arrábida mountains and Atlantic providing the backdrop. And unlike many wildlife encounters that require a long journey away from the main destination, the experience can be incorporated into a wider day exploring the Arrábida region.

Event planner’s tip: This is a strong option for a morning excursion, particularly for groups who have already experienced Comporta's beaches and want something completely different.

Make an Afternoon of Oysters

Comporta's relationship with the water extends well beyond its beaches.

The surrounding estuary and Atlantic coast are closely tied to the region's seafood culture, making oyster tasting an easy way to turn local produce into an experience.

Rather than simply serving oysters as part of a dinner, build the experience around them: meet local producers, learn about the waters where they are cultivated, taste different varieties and pair them with Portuguese wines.

It’s a small-scale experience, but that is precisely the point. For smaller incentive groups and VIP programmes, these more intimate culinary moments can often feel more distinctive than a large formal dinner.

Event planner’s tip: Pair an oyster tasting with a boat trip or sunset drinks for a relaxed afternoon on the water.

Get Behind the Wheel

For groups who want to explore the landscape at a faster pace, buggy or off-road drives provide a more adventurous way to discover the area.

The network of sandy tracks, pine forests and rural landscapes around Comporta lends itself to guided off-road experiences, allowing groups to move beyond the main roads and explore a side of the region that would otherwise be difficult to access.

Event planner’s tip: Build a route around a destination lunch, vineyard visit or countryside stop, with teams setting off on different routes before coming together at the final location.

Learn to Cook Like a Local

Food is perhaps the easiest way to introduce a group to Portuguese culture - particularly when delegates get to make it themselves.

A Portuguese cooking workshop, such as an Arroz Doce workshop, turns a familiar dish into a hands-on cultural experience. Arroz doce is deeply rooted in Portuguese culinary tradition, with regional variations and a long association with family celebrations and local festivities.

For a Comporta programme, the experience could go further by focusing on the ingredients and traditions of the Alentejo: local rice, seafood, herbs, olive oil and regional produce.

Event planner’s tip: Ideal for a relaxed afternoon activity, team challenge or pre-dinner experience. It also offers an easy opportunity for delegates to take something home with them, quite literally.

See Comporta from the Water

With the Sado Estuary on one side and the Atlantic on the other, water is an obvious part of the Comporta experience.

Private sailing and boat trips can take groups along the coastline, around the estuary or towards the Arrábida landscape. The nearby Tróia Marina provides access to the Sado and Atlantic, with opportunities to explore beaches and the coastline from the water.

For an incentive group, the appeal is partly the scenery, but also the change of pace. After several days of meetings, transfers and activities, there is something particularly effective about putting everyone on a boat with nowhere else to be.

Event planner’s tip: Think sunset sailing, a private lunch on board, coastal swimming stops or a final afternoon on the water.

And for Something a Little Quieter...

Not every memorable incentive experience needs to be high-energy.

Comporta's Sado Estuary is one of the region's most important natural environments, with wetlands, rice fields, dunes and forests supporting more than 200 bird species.

A private birdwatching or nature walk can offer a completely different perspective on the destination, particularly when led by someone who can explain the landscape and its wildlife.

Cycling through the rice fields is another option, while hiking routes around Comporta and nearby landscapes provide a slower way to experience the region.

Event planner’s tip: This is particularly well suited to wellness-led programmes, smaller groups and early-morning activities.

The best way to experience Comporta?

Make the destination part of the programme.

Ride through its rice fields. Taste its wines. Get out on the water. Meet its producers. Learn its recipes. Watch the sun set over the Atlantic.

For incentive planners, that's the real appeal of Comporta: the destination offers an incredible backdrop for experiences that feel personal, local and difficult to replicate elsewhere.

And as the inVOYAGE community heads to Comporta next month, these are just some of the experiences that will help us discover what makes this corner of Portugal so distinctive.
