Everyday Miracles: Tales from the Unsung Heroes
When we think about luxury hotels, it’s easy to picture sweeping views, Michelin-starred meals, and grand lobbies with polished Italian marbled floors. But how often do we consider the silent architects behind the running of the hotel: from the doormen and butlers to the concierge and front of house team – their training, knowledge, expertise, commitment to excellence, and all with remarkable stories to tell of moments where they made the impossible happen as just part of their daily job.
From last-minute proposals to lost treasures and cufflinks found just in the nick of time, here’s a closer look at some of the standout stories from the hotels joining us in 2025.

Bring out the Catwalk - The Savoy
“One day, we were approached by a guest with a rather unique vision: they wanted to surprise their friends with a private fashion show - right in their suite. Not just a fun dress-up moment, but the full experience, complete with a catwalk, music, lighting, and an extravagant selection of outfits.
Working with local costume designers and stylists, we transformed the suite into a miniature runway. A spotlight was installed, outfits sourced, and a makeshift catwalk created - all with meticulous attention to detail… The guest’s friends took turns strutting down the runway, creating a memorable and hilarious event that everyone enjoyed.
It was a perfect example of how we can turn even the most imaginative ideas into reality.”
Champagne Above The Clouds - Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski
“One recent winter morning at the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz, a well-travelled man approached our desk with a bold wish: to propose to his partner in style on a pristine mountaintop after a private heli ski descent, with Champagne chilled in snow and a gourmet picnic ready upon landing.
No ordinary request, but then, this is no ordinary team. Within hours, our Chief Concierge, together with his dedicated team had coordinated the whole thing – with the help of our trusted helicopter partners, liaising with mountain guides to identify the perfect untouched peak, and working hand-in-hand with our Executive Chef to design an indulgent alpine spread featuring truffle-infused cheese fondue, handcrafted pastries, and vintage Champagne.
The next day, the couple soared over glittering ridgelines, carved first tracks into virgin powder, and were greeted at 2,200 meters by our chef at a snow-crystal table set against the majestic Engadin skyline. The moment, intimate, wild, unforgettable, was sealed with a “yes.”
For our concierge team, it was simply another day of crafting the extraordinary and turning luxurious dreams into alpine reality, one breathtaking request at a time."
Don’t mention the cufflinks! – Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
“Our story begins on New Year’s Eve, when a distinguished guest was preparing for a highly important celebration. While getting ready, he realised he had forgotten his cufflinks, a small yet significant detail that could have unsettled the moment.
Understanding the importance of effortless perfection, our Concierge quietly stepped in. Without hesitation, a Team Member arranged for a personal pair from his own collection, one that matched perfectly, to be delivered to the guest’s Suite that very evening.
A simple gesture, carried out with grace, ensured that the evening unfolded just as it should, and that the guest’s stay remained flawless in every small but meaningful detail, flowing seamlessly and beautifully.”
The Sky’s The Limit – Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
“Another day, a guest arrived at our desk with a very particular wish: to drive a supercar through the blooming tulip fields. A wonderful vision, yet nearly impossible to fulfil due to strict seasonal regulations and limited access to such locations.
Rather than let this dream fade, our Guest Service Team reimagined the request with their own inspired creativity: a private helicopter tour touring over the bright, colourful fields of the Dutch countryside.
What started as a simple wish became a lasting memory.
Against the Clock: The Abu Dhabi Edition
“In May, a guest approached our concierge desk in a state of panic - he had accidentally left a valuable item at the Presidential Palace, Qasr Al Watan. With his international flight just a few hours away, he was told by Palace staff that they were closing for the day and unable to assist until the following morning.
That’s when Surendra, our Bell Desk Supervisor, stepped in. Refusing to let the guest leave Abu Dhabi without his belongings, Surendra reached out to the Palace once more. He explained the urgency and made a bold request: to involve the on-site security team, who would remain on duty even after the main areas were closed. It was an unusual approach - but one that worked.
After some back-and-forth coordination, the item was located by security personnel. Surendra then arranged for it to be handed off at the main gate, since the reception area would be inaccessible by the time the guest arrived. The plan went off without a hitch. The guest retrieved his item, made it to the airport on time, and left a heartfelt thank-you note praising the dedication of our team.
Fun fact: Qasr Al Watan contains over 350,000 crystal pieces in its chandeliers – so recovering a single item from that palace? No small feat. This story is a shining example of the quick thinking, creativity, and guest-first mindset that sets our team apart.”
The Surprise Trip – Conrad Chia Laguna
“Working as a Concierge in a five-star luxury resort is definitely an experience full of daily surprises. I’m lucky enough to meet people with all kinds of wishes, but a few months ago, I received a very special request: a guest who confided in me that he wanted to propose to his partner during their stay.
He wanted something authentic and romantic, but not extravagant. So, we started planning the perfect moment together. I arranged a few special activities for them throughout their stay: a private wine tasting, a horseback ride along the beach, and a couples’ massage at the Conrad Spa. Small touches to make them feel pampered, without revealing the real purpose of the trip.
For the proposal, we chose the beach at the Dune di Campana - a place I know well, intimate and breathtaking. I set up a secluded spot with cushions, lanterns, a chilled bottle of Vermentino, and soft background music. She thought it was just a romantic dinner. When he knelt down with the ring in his hand, she was speechless. Then she said yes, through tears, with the sound of the waves in the background.
The next day, they came by the reception to say goodbye. She was still emotional, and he had a huge smile on his face. They thanked me for making it all possible. It’s one of those moments I’ll never forget. Making a difference in someone’s memory is the most beautiful part of my job.”
“The dog and the private plane” – Conrad Algarve
“The most important thing in this job is to always be sensitive to your clients, their needs, and their means. Our guests tell me time and again that they think of the penthouse as a home away from home, because I can kit them out with all their home comforts, while ensuring that any special requests are taken care of and not a worry in terms of cost, logistics, anything.”
A few years back, we had a Russian guest that was staying at the Infinity Penthouse Suite, that had a very peculiar Collection, "dogs"! One day, I arranged for him to see and buy the champion breeder of "pastor Serra da estrela" up north 500km. We went on his Maserati and took a translator with us, as he couldn't speak English or Portuguese.
Another occasion, I went with a guest to do a guided visit through Lisbon, on our way back to the hotel, he asked me to arrange a private plane so he could go to Paris with friends the following morning. While driving I spoke with some contacts to arrange the trip. By the time I arrived to the hotel, I had three portfolios ready for him to choose from. The one he settled on? A sleek, €58,000 jet all ready for Paris the next morning...
Behind every great hotel is an even greater story.
