Inside The Peninsula : What It Really Takes to Deliver a World-Class Event
Behind-the-scenes tour of Peninsula Bangkok with Masahisa
Ahead of inVOYAGE Bangkok this April, we sat down with the Managing Director of The Peninsula Bangkok to talk about what goes into delivering a truly exceptional event.
From evolving guest expectations to the balance between personalisation and precision, this is a behind-the-scenes look at how one of Bangkok’s leading hotels approaches luxury today and why the city continues to surprise even the most seasoned planners.
Emily, inVOYAGE: Masahisa, you’ve led some exceptional properties throughout your career. Looking back, what moments or experiences most shaped the way you think about hospitality today and what continues to inspire you in your role?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: I have been privileged to build my career across several Peninsula properties, each shaping my perspective on hospitality.
My time at The Peninsula Hong Kong, often regarded as the grand dame of hotels was particularly formative. It instilled in me a deep appreciation for heritage, precision, and the uncompromising standards that define true luxury. That foundation was further strengthened in Manila, where, as Managing Director, I navigated the complexities of COVID-19, an experience that reinforced the importance of resilience, composure, and leading with clarity and empathy.
What continues to inspire me is the development of people, seeing individuals grow and build meaningful careers. Equally, delivering strong, sustainable performance for our owners remains essential. True leadership lies in balancing both with integrity and purpose.
Emily, inVOYAGE: What first attracted you to The Peninsula Bangkok, and what makes this property particularly special to you as a hotelier?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: Thailand has always held a special place in my heart. Even during my school years, I had hoped to work here one day, although that aspiration did not materialise at the time.
When the opportunity to lead The Peninsula Bangkok arose, it felt both timely and personal. It was a very natural decision for me and my family.
What makes this property truly special is its unique sense of place. The riverside setting along the Chao Phraya River offers a rare combination of tranquillity and connection to the city’s cultural energy. As a hotelier, it presents an incredible canvas to create meaningful guest experiences where heritage, location, and the Peninsula’s signature service come together seamlessly.
Emily, inVOYAGE: From your perspective, what makes Bangkok particularly well suited to high-end incentive and luxury events and what does it offer that’s difficult to replicate elsewhere in Asia?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: Bangkok is uniquely positioned as a destination that seamlessly blends cultural depth with modern sophistication. The city is exceptionally well connected, with direct flights from virtually anywhere in the world. For high-end incentive travel and luxury events, it offers a rare balance of world-class hospitality, exceptional value, and a rich sense of place.
What truly sets Bangkok apart is its energy and contrast. Within a single day, guests can experience centuries-old traditions alongside contemporary dining, design, and retail. Combined with Thailand’s renowned service culture, this creates a level of warmth and authenticity that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Emily, inVOYAGE: What misconceptions do you think people often have about Bangkok when it comes to luxury travel & events?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: One common misconception is that Bangkok is purely a bustling, high-energy city, with little space for tranquillity or refined luxury. In reality, the city offers remarkable pockets of calm, particularly along the Chao Phraya River, where guests can experience a more serene and elevated side of Bangkok.
There is also an assumption that luxury in Bangkok is defined by value alone. While the city is competitively priced, the level of craftsmanship, service, and cultural richness goes far beyond that, and it is truly world-class.
Emily, inVOYAGE: How does the hotel help connect guests with the culture and rhythm of the city beyond its walls?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: At The Peninsula Bangkok, we see ourselves as a gateway to the city’s cultural heartbeat. Our riverside location allows guests to connect with Bangkok in an authentic and immersive way, from travelling by boat along the Chao Phraya River to exploring historic neighbourhoods just moments away.
Through curated experiences, including those offered via our Daily Wellness Activities and The Peninsula Academy, we enable guests to engage more deeply with Thai culture, whether through culinary traditions, local artisans, or meaningful community connections, ensuring their experience extends well beyond the hotel itself.
Incentives & Group Experiences
Emily, inVOYAGE: When groups arrive at The Peninsula Bangkok, what do you think they notice first?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: I believe what guests notice first is a sense of calm and arrival. Despite being in one of Asia’s most dynamic cities, the hotel offers an immediate feeling of space, tranquillity, and privacy.
The river views, the openness of the design, and the warmth of our welcome all contribute to a strong first impression, one that feels both luxurious and genuinely personal.
Emily, inVOYAGE: What do you think has most changed in recent years in terms of guest expectation?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: Guest expectations have evolved significantly in recent years. Today’s travellers are looking for more than comfort and service, they are seeking meaningful, personalised experiences.
There is a greater emphasis on wellness, authenticity, and flexibility, as well as a desire for experiences that feel unique and shareable. At the same time, the fundamentals, genuine service, attention to detail, and consistency, remain as important as ever.
Emily, inVOYAGE: What types of incentive programmes work especially well at the hotel - leadership retreats, celebration trips, reward programmes - and why?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: The Peninsula Bangkok is particularly well suited for leadership retreats, celebration journeys, and curated reward programmes. Our setting naturally supports both productivity and relaxation, offering privacy for focused discussions alongside inspiring spaces for social connection.
What makes the experience especially distinctive is the versatility of our venues and programming. From our riverside Lawn, which is ideal for bespoke dinners and receptions, to fully equipped function spaces and an elegant ballroom, we are able to create highly tailored environments for each group.
Programmes that combine structured meetings with immersive experiences tend to be especially successful. We offer a wide range of group activities, including wellness classes, yoga, pickleball, and can curate dedicated wellness journeys that complement the overall programme.
Together with exceptional dining and cultural elements, this allows us to deliver experiences that are both purposeful and memorable.
Emily, inVOYAGE You briefly mentioned The Peninsula Academy earlier. In terms of experiences, what unique opportunity do you offer incentives and luxury groups?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: The Peninsula Academy is an important extension of our philosophy of experiential luxury, offering guests access to curated, insider experiences that go beyond traditional travel.
In Bangkok, we have further enriched this through our Daily Wellness Activities, which include a diverse range of offerings, from sunrise yoga and Thai cooking classes to curated cultural experiences, allowing guests to engage more meaningfully with the destination.
For incentive and luxury groups, this creates an opportunity to move beyond standard itineraries. Whether through exclusive cultural encounters, immersive culinary journeys, or hands-on workshops, these experiences are designed to be both enriching and memorable.

Emily, inVOYAGE: Is there anything in particular you hope attendees will take away from experiencing the hotel firsthand during the event?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: We hope attendees leave with a genuine sense of place, an understanding of what makes The Peninsula distinctive, as well as a deeper appreciation for Bangkok as a luxury destination.
More importantly, we hope they experience the warmth of our hospitality and the level of care we bring to every detail. Those are the elements that truly stay with guests long after their visit.
Emily, inVOYAGE: What advice would you give event planners who are thinking about bringing an event to Bangkok and to The Peninsula Bangkok for the first time?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: My advice would be to embrace Bangkok as more than just a destination, but as an experience. The city offers incredible versatility, and the most successful events are those that thoughtfully incorporate its culture, energy, and sense of place.
At The Peninsula Bangkok, we work closely with planners to tailor each programme, ensuring it reflects both their objectives and the unique opportunities the destination offers. We provide a range of versatile venues, from outdoor riverside settings and spaces overlooking the Chao Phraya River to an elegant grand ballroom, allowing for truly bespoke event experiences.
Emily, inVOYAGE: Finally, what does great hospitality mean to you today - beyond service standards and design?
Masahisa, The Peninsula Bangkok: Great hospitality today goes beyond service standards or design, it is about creating a sense of belonging. It is the ability to anticipate needs, to personalise each interaction, and to make guests feel genuinely cared for. Ultimately, it is about creating meaningful moments that resonate on a human level, and that leave a lasting impression.
We are proud to be partnering with the Peninsula Bangkok for inVOYAGE Bangkok (17-20 April 2026).
