Barcelona: The Experiences Your VIPs Won't Find on Google

Everyone knows Barcelona. Gaudí, tapas, the Gothic Quarter, the beach. But for a VIP incentive, there is so much more to discover beyond the obvious. Think private sailing, wine tasting among the vineyards, lunch in the Catalan countryside or a trip to Montserrat. We take a closer look at some of the experiences worth knowing about – and how they can give a VIP programme a very different side to Barcelona.

Take Barcelona out onto the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is one of Barcelona’s greatest assets and yet it’s surprisingly easy to miss off an incentive programme.

A private yacht or catamaran gives groups a completely different view of Barcelona and can work particularly well for a VIPs who want exclusivity without too much formality. This could be as simple as a sunset cruise with cocktails and canapés, or something more put-together such as a private dinner on board.

For a group that enjoys a little competition, a sailing regatta brings another dimension, with the chance to race against each other while working together on board, with plenty of time aftewards for drinks and lunch. The beauty of a day on the water is that it can work in several different ways. It can be the main event of the day, a relaxed afternoon between meetings, or the start of an evening programme.

Spend a Day Among the Vineyards

Barcelona's wine country offers another chance to explore beyond the city centre.

Within around an hour, you can reach the vineyards of Catalunya and enjoy a day among the vines, visiting wineries, meeting producers and tasting wines in the place where they are made.

This is particularly great for smaller VIP groups. A private vineyard visit is so much more personal than a conventional wine tasting, particularly when there is access to the people behind the wine and somewhere special to sit down for lunch afterwards.

The experience can also be tailored around the group. A morning of wine tasting could lead into a long lunch at a private estate, while a more active group might explore the surrounding countryside before sitting down to eat.

And it doesn’t have to stop at wine. Catalunya's food culture gives planners plenty of scope to build a wider culinary experience around the region, from olive oil and local produce to chef-led lunches and dinners that showcase ingredients from the surrounding area.

Montserrat, with a little more time

Montserrat is an obvious addition to any Barcelona itinerary, but when it comes to an incentive, a standard sightseeing stop doesn’t always do the destination justice. Instead, why not spend the day within the Benedictine monastery to fully experience its place in Catalan history and culture. A private guide can bring the history of the site to life, while music, storytelling and more personal access can give guests a better understanding of why Montserrat remains such an important part of Catalan identity.

The landscape itself is also worth making time for. Rather than rushing through a visit before returning to Barcelona, groups can take a slower approach, combining the mountain setting with a private lunch or another experience in the surrounding area. For a VIP group, that extra thought can make a familiar attraction feel much more special.

Nature Meets Gastronomy

Barcelona's food scene is already a major draw, but some of the most interesting culinary experiences sit outside the traditional restaurant setting.

Catalan food lends itself particularly well to experiences that are connected to the landscape. Think a chef-led lunch among the vineyards, a private meal at an estate or a menu built around local produce and regional traditions.

For a smaller group, a private chef experience can offer the kind of access that would be difficult to recreate in a larger restaurant. For a bigger incentive, food can become part of the wider programme, perhaps with a market visit, a local producer or a private tasting before dinner.

And Then, There's W Barcelona

And after a day exploring the city, coast or countryside, there is something rather nice about coming back to the Mediterranean. W Barcelona's position on Barceloneta beach gives event planners another way to keep the destination at the heart of the stay, whether that means sunset cocktails overlooking the sea, a beachfront celebration, private dining or something more intimate for a VIP group.

The hotel's AWAY® Spa offers another way to slow things down, while its suite collection can provide a more private setting for receptions, dinners or celebrations. There is also plenty of scope to bring food and drink into the experience, from chef-led dining to more informal evenings built around cocktails and the view.

And with W Barcelona emerging as a fully reimagined beachfront destination by Spring 2027, there will be even more to work with.
