Inside the Transformation of W Barcelona

Few hotels are as instantly recognisable as W Barcelona. Its sail-shaped silhouette has watched over Barceloneta beach since 2009, and for almost two decades it's needed no introduction. Designed by Ricardo Bofill and nicknamed "Hotel Vela," it's one of the few hotels in Europe guests can point out from a plane window.

Now, quietly and deliberately, it's changing. The hotel is underway on a significant, multi-phase transformation, reimagining its guestrooms, suites and public spaces while holding onto everything that made it a landmark in the first place.

An Icon Reimagined

If you have worked on events in Barcelona, chances are you know W Barcelona. The sail-shaped hotel has been part of the city's skyline for almost two decades, with the Mediterranean on one side, Barceloneta on the other and that unmistakable W energy running through the property.

But the hotel is now entering a new phase. Rather than losing the personality that made it famous, the renovation is bringing a more considered feel to the interiors, making more of the beachfront setting and giving planners a new version of a hotel they may already have in their contacts list.

And because the transformation is happening in stages, there is an interesting window between the W Barcelona clients know and the one they will see by Spring 2027.

What is Changing at W Barcelona?

The first phase of W Barcelona's transformation is already live across floors 7 to 25, with a completely refreshed collection of rooms and suites. Superior Sky Rooms, Premier Sky Rooms and Corner Suites sit alongside W Suites, Loft Suites, Onada Suites and the new Penthouse Suite, giving the upper floors a very different feel from the W Barcelona many repeat guests will remember.

The design takes its cues from the setting. Warmer materials, softer textures and a more relaxed palette bring the Mediterranean into the rooms, while the sea and Barcelona skyline remain firmly part of the experience. Even the new Onada Suites take their name from the Catalan word for "wave" – a small detail that says quite a lot about the direction of the renovation.

For event planners, the new rooms offer a fairly simple way to refresh a familiar proposal. A client who has stayed at W Barcelona before can now experience a very different version of the hotel. For VIP groups and senior delegations, the new suites also provide a stronger accommodation proposition, with the Penthouse and larger suite categories creating options for more private stays.

And this is only the beginning. The remaining guestrooms and key public spaces will follow, with the full €100 million transformation expected to be complete by Spring 2027.

A Hotel Built Around the Mediterranean

For all the changes happening inside, one thing hasn't changed: the address.

W Barcelona sits directly on Barceloneta beach, with the Mediterranean outside and the city stretching behind it. The Gothic Quarter, Port Vell and Barcelona's cultural and culinary scene are all close enough to bring into a programme, while the sea gives the hotel a completely different setting to work with.

That makes it particularly useful for incentives. A morning can be spent exploring the city before the group returns to the water for an afternoon experience. Dinner can take place overlooking the Mediterranean, or a sunset drinks reception can make the most of the hotel's beachfront position.

The hotel doesn't compete with Barcelona. It gives planners another way to use it.

What Does the Renovation Mean for Events?

The rooms may be getting the attention first, but the wider transformation has implications for events too.

W Barcelona already has the infrastructure for sizeable programmes, with 5,203 sqm of event space across 21 event spaces. The Great Room can accommodate up to 750 guests theatre-style, while the hotel's restaurants and social spaces give planners plenty of options beyond the traditional meeting room.

But what makes the renovation particularly compelling is the way these spaces are being brought into the same design direction as the new guestrooms. The result is a more cohesive experience across the property, from the first meeting of the day through to dinner, drinks and the evening.

And there is plenty of variety to work with.

A product launch in the Great Room can be followed by cocktails outside as the sun goes down. An executive retreat can combine focused meetings with time at the Wet Deck and AWAY® Spa. A gala can begin indoors and move onto a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. Or a multi-day incentive can see guests moving between meetings, dining, wellness and celebrations seamlessly.

The Space to Slow the Programme Down

A good incentive programme needs some breathing room too.

At W Barcelona, AWAY® Spa gives planners another way to build that into the stay. There is an indoor pool overlooking the Mediterranean, Finnish sauna and steam room, a 300 sqm fitness centre and a treatment menu that includes recovery massages, facials and wellness rituals.

For an incentive group, this could mean leaving an afternoon open after a busy day in Barcelona. For a leadership retreat, it could mean giving guests time to reset between meetings and dinner. And for VIPs, the combination of the spa, suites and sea views creates another layer of privacy within a hotel that can otherwise accommodate much larger programmes.

It is a small shift in the way the property can be used: not every part of the stay needs to be scheduled.
